A Town Hall Burns in Limoges While Nvidia and Apple Pay for a White House Ballroom

October 19, 2026 — Fabio Gentili observatory13 – 19 October 2026

Editorial

Public buildings were the week’s subject, and two countries treated them in opposite ways.

On Thursday 15 October the Washington Post obtained the internal ledgers of the campaign paying for the new ballroom at the White House. It has brought in $333 million. At least $77 million came from donors whose names appear nowhere; fifty-seven pledges exceeded $100,000; Nvidia and Apple each put up $25 million, Alphabet $22 million through a lawyer’s trust, Microsoft and Palantir $10 million apiece. One donor had pledged $2.5 million a year earlier, and her father, a banker, received a presidential pardon in January. Nothing here breaks a rule, construction continues, and the president’s line is that it costs the taxpayer nothing.

Two days later the French city of Limoges lost its own civic building. Several hundred demonstrators forced the main door with a battering ram, according to Mayor Guillaume Guerin, who noted that the national police had been deployed to a march a few streets away. By Sunday morning the 43-metre belfry had come down into a hall that opened in 1883, a listed neo-Renaissance echo of the Paris Hôtel de Ville that had come through two world wars untouched. Prefect Maurice Barate said only the west wing survived and called the loss a disaster for France’s heritage.

Walls bought on one side of the Atlantic and walls broken on the other: the distance between the governing and the governed was measured this week in masonry. Marseille’s city hall lobby was briefly occupied, a tourist office in Lyon was set alight, and in Paris the plinth of the Marianne on the place de la République was taken apart by hand.

A third thread runs beneath those two and travels faster than either. The school blockade that began in the northern suburbs of Paris reached Syntagma Square in Athens on Tuesday, the education ministry in Tirana on Wednesday, the universities of Buenos Aires on Thursday and ten Italian cities on Friday, with no shared secretariat anywhere in the chain. Meanwhile two badges of standing stopped working in China at once: a degree taken abroad and a French monogram. The teenager at a school gate in Lyon and the shopper reselling a handbag in Shanghai have nothing in common except the habit of pricing what used to be taken for granted.

Limoges Loses Its Town Hall and Macron Goes on Television

France, 13 October: the fifth national day of action drew 161,500 by the interior ministry’s count against 480,000 claimed by the youth unions, alongside 214 schools closed and 3,000 substitute teachers being dispatched.

17 October: 110 marches and 550,000 people, or 800,000 per the organisers, 110,000 of them in Paris. Limoges lost its 1883 town hall, a tourist office burned in Lyon, Marseille’s city hall lobby was occupied and the Marianne’s plinth in Paris was taken apart.

Saturday’s ledger: 2,397 taken into custody and 997 police and gendarmes injured, seven of them seriously; 855 arrests in the Paris region with 557 still held; a demonstrator in Saint-Étienne lost a hand; one man died of a heart attack.

Macron, Sunday at eight: «Ceux qui ont détruit doivent payer, ceux qui ont pillé doivent rembourser». A crisis unit from Monday, prefects free to ban particular gatherings, no state of emergency. Retailleau wants one; Le Pen speaks of a «crise profonde de confiance».

Italy and Germany: «No Meloni Day» reached ten cities from 16 October, over 5,000 marching in Turin and about 2,000 in Bologna; the YouTrend-AGI average of 15 October puts both coalitions above the 42 percent majority-bonus gate, 43.1 to 42.9\. In Bonn, Merz called pension reform «überfällig».

No Kings Becomes a Turnout Machine

«No Kings: Vote Early», 17 October: more than 2,500 events in all fifty states, no central march, group walks to polling places, voting-plan clinics and workshops on defending the count.

Ezra Levin of Indivisible: «We’re done sending a message». The coalition includes the ACLU, the American Federation of Teachers, Black Voters Matter Fund, 50501, the League of Women Voters, MoveOn, Public Citizen, State Voices and Voto Latino.

Georgia, 13 October: 188,668 in-person votes on day one against 134,655 in 2022, plus some 10,300 absentee ballots accepted.

National early vote by 15 October: about 6.2 million cast; 51.1 percent Democratic to 28.7 percent Republican where registration is recorded; turnout 24 percent above 2022; Virginia 450,000 against 200,000; Pennsylvania 272,620 to 85,809.

White House ballroom, 15 October: $333 million raised, at least $77 million anonymous, 57 donors above $100,000\. Nvidia and Apple gave $25 million each, Alphabet $22 million, Microsoft and Palantir $10 million each.

A Foreign Degree and a French Monogram Lose Their Premium

Audit study by He Haoran of Beijing Normal University, in the China Economic Quarterly and reported on 13 October: 4,500 fictitious résumés to 2,250 real postings, and the returnee version drew 16.2 percent fewer callbacks.

The penalty was heaviest in low-paying roles, purely domestic firms and mid-tier foreign schools. Asked whether a returnee degree is still in demand, the author’s answer is that it is not.

Flows: departures down about a fifth, from 703,500 in 2019 to 570,600 in 2025; returns up from 495,000 to 535,600 in a year; 6.44 million of 7.43 million overseas students are home, 87 percent of them since 2012.

Molly Tea, per Fortune on 15 October: 10.3 million yuan in damages to Louis Vuitton, Weibo discussion past 360 million views, LVMH fashion and leather goods at €8.25 billion with organic sales down 5 percent and Asia excluding Japan from plus four to minus five.

Pre-owned, per AFP on 18 October: second-hand luxury up 15 to 20 percent in 2025 and worth 38.4 billion yuan, forecast above 100 billion by 2030, while the market for new goods fell 3 to 5 percent.

GLOBAL TRENDS

Athens, Tirana, Buenos Aires: four countries in four days

High tension

The School Blockade Travels Without a Federation

Athens, 13 October: tents in Syntagma Square, €600 for a studio flat, halls of residence covering under 4 percent of need and no dormitory at all at the University of West Attica.

Tirana, 14 October: the education ministry and a Raiffeisen branch set alight on day two, tear gas and water cannon, parliament’s sitting cancelled, and a demand to cancel the sale of southern coastline to a Kushner-backed resort.

Buenos Aires, 15 October: thousands of students and university staff against Javier Milei’s education cuts. Italy followed on 16 October.

Four countries in four days beyond France, with no joint secretariat and no signed platform: the blockade travels as a format, which is why it is fast and why nobody can negotiate on its behalf.

Status moving in two directions: resale and clear-headed spending in China, $333 million of corporate gifts for a federal building in Washington. In Limoges the symbol was neither bought nor dropped but burned.

Weekly deep-dive

Focus

The Walls of Public Buildings

A battering ram in Limoges, a donor ledger in Washington and tents in Syntagma Square — three ways of settling accounts with an institution.

Nothing in Washington broke a rule, and nothing in Limoges was planned by anyone who could be negotiated with. Those two facts frame the week.

France: 550,000 in the streets on 17 October, 2,397 detained, 997 officers injured · Limoges: an 1883 town hall and a 43-metre belfry lost · Washington: $333 million for a ballroom, $77 million of it anonymous, 57 donors above $100,000 · Georgia: 188,668 first-day early votes against 134,655 in 2022 · China: 16.2 percent fewer callbacks for an American master’s

The protest wave has crossed five countries without a federation. It moves as a format, which explains both its speed and the absence of anyone who could sign a settlement on its behalf.

«Ceux qui ont détruit doivent payer, ceux qui ont pillé doivent rembourser» — Emmanuel Macron, address to the nation, 18 October 2026

China offers the version with neither a ballot nor a gate. Branded luxury is giving way to resale, a foreign degree now costs its holder callbacks, and the slang the week produced for all this is clear-headed spending.

---

Conclusions

One Door Forced, One Ballroom Funded

Two pictures of the same object survive the week. A few hundred people in Limoges used a battering ram on the door of an 1883 town hall and brought its belfry down, on a day that put 550,000 French citizens in the streets by the interior ministry’s count and ended with 2,397 taken into custody. In Washington fifty-seven donors assembled $333 million to rebuild the event space of the presidential residence, at least $77 million of it without names attached, and no rule was broken. Between the two sits a generation that has learned to read a price: €600 for a studio in Athens, 16.2 percent fewer callbacks for a Chinese applicant holding an American master’s, a second-hand handbag chosen over a new one because it costs less.

The dates ahead are close. The United States votes on 3 November, with early turnout already running nearly a quarter above 2022\. The French National Assembly votes on 17 November on the €54 billion budget that started all of this. Spain votes on the 29th. The question these weeks leave is not how much anger the polls can measure, which has been known for months. It is where the anger goes: some of it queued at an early-voting site in Georgia, some of it stood at the door of a French town hall, and nobody yet knows which queue is growing faster.
