ETF and stock technical analysis: after the vote Microsoft stock jumps 6.68%, Eaton stock falls 9.86% and oil slides; UniCredit stock rises 5.47% in Milan
On Wednesday 4 November the market read the result of the US midterm elections, a broad Democratic win including Texas, and turned it into a violent rotation rather than an even rally. ETF technical analysis says it in one line: the consumer discretionary ETF XLY gained 4.26%, the financials ETF XLF 3.51%, the healthcare ETF XLV 3.06%; the energy ETF XLE lost 4.74% and the semiconductor ETF SOXX 3.14%.
Two stories in one. First: with a Democratic Congress the market expects less artificial intelligence spending and tighter rules on data centres, so it bought the companies that use AI, Microsoft stock up 6.68% and Apple stock up 5.31%, and sold the ones that build and power it, Eaton stock down 9.86% and Cipher down 19.95%. Second: WTI crude lost 8.3% on bets that the war with Iran is ending, and money moved from energy and defence into travel.
In Europe the Milan market ran with the banks: the FTSE MIB ETF closed up 2.33%, with UniCredit stock up 5.47% and Intesa Sanpaolo stock up 4.93%; Prysmian stock fell 6.91%, sold along with US data centre suppliers with no news of its own.
US equity volatility collapsed 20% in one session. Our model stays long the S&P 500 and short the Nasdaq 100 and the Italian basket, where the price closed above the weekly level: Friday decides. Today the Bank of England and results from Siemens Healthineers, Buzzi and Pirelli.

ETF technical analysis: consumer discretionary rises 4.26%, financials 3.51%, healthcare 3.06%; energy falls 4.74%, semiconductors 3.14%
An ETF is an exchange-traded fund that buys a whole basket of stocks in one go: following sector ETFs is the quickest way to see where money is moving. On Wednesday it moved in bulk, out of the sectors tied to oil and data centres and into those that gain from cheaper fuel and lower rates.
In the US XLY, the consumer discretionary ETF, rose 4.26%, XLF, financials, 3.51% closing on the high, XLC, communications, 3.47%, XLP, consumer staples, 3.36%, XLV, healthcare, 3.06%. At the bottom XLE, the energy ETF, down 4.74%, SOXX, semiconductors, down 3.14%, XLI, industrials, down 1.09%; XLK, technology, closed flat and near its low. GLD, the gold ETF, gained 3.68%.
